What is "Chinese Drywall?
In short, the term "Chinese Drywall" (which is also referred to as "Contaminated Drywall" or "Tainted Drywall") refers to a recycled drywall which emits odors and gases. Some experts believe that offgassing is caused by pockets of sulfur ions that react with carbon monoxide and create corrosive compounds. These gases produce a foul odor and damage property, including your air conditioner, electrical wiring, copper plumbing, appliances and electronics. These gases are also believed to cause health issues, although it is unclear whether there could be long-term effects. Many are calling into question the validity of air quality tests recently performed by the CPSC, which still maintains there is no established nexus between Chinese drywall, corrosion and health effects.

The above components, a/c coil, electrical components and washing machine plumbing all affected by chemicals found in the recycled product manufactured into drywall. Bare wires and metal components should be shiny copper.
Defective Chinese drywall is known to cause but not limited to:
- Repeated air-conditioning failures.
- Corrosion of wiring in electrical sockets and other spots.
- Corrosion of plumbing components.
- Blackening of metal jewelry, ornaments, mirrors and other items in the home.
- Failures of electronic devices such as computers, televisions and appliances.
- Odor similar to sulfur or vinegar like smell (some affected homes have no odor).
- Rust or corrosion of galvanized metal components like hurricane clips and framing plates.
NOTE: Currently, a chinese drywall inspection is a visual inspection of all plumbing, electrical and HVAC components. Other indications include the above listed items. This is not conclusive, but if any of the indications arise, it is suggested that a professional testing facility remove samples for review.
